The fifth Ramone

Arturo Vega is the art director of the Ramones and the author of Ramones iconic logo.
He was born in Chihuaha, Mexico, but he arrived in New York in 1972 entering the bowels of a decadent and dark city: he started to sell Quaalude pills in the Club 82, wearing a wig as disguise. In the meantime he created pop-art works.
While one day he met the Ramones. He first met Douglas Colvin, who became Dee Dee Ramone later on. Joey and Dee Dee moved to Arturo's loft, the headquarter of the group. Arturo became their art director: he created the cover of the album "Rocket to Russia", the iconic logo of the band and the Ramones look in general. Basically he became the fifth Ramone.
The notable logo was born after a trip in Washington in 1976. Arturo wanted to create a symbol which could do justice of their power: a particular power because, as the Americans, the Ramones were aggressive, but innocent in the meantime. They were a bunch of angry kids shouting to draw attention to them. They were the last revolutionaries. They were the punk culture. J.S.
